St. Louis, MO (KSDK)- A happy couple is celebrating their engagement and they have the well wishes of thousands of baseball fans.
A soldier made a very public proposal at Busch Stadium on Friday night.
It was a night to remember for 20 year old Shelby Fetsch of Overland. After nearly six months apart, the couple reunited at Busch Stadium at the annual game called "This One's For You" dedicated to recognizing the sacrifices troops make for us.
"I was freaking out when I saw him. I was like there's no way that's him," said Fetsch. That's because 22 year old Specialist William Johanson came home on a two week leave ahead of schedule.
The surprise didn't end there.
"I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you," said Johanson as he got down on one knee and proposed to Shelby.
"I was in complete shock that he would do that in front of 43,375 people," said Shelby.
"I wanted to do something that people don't do all the time. I wanted to do something that it would be hard to top and she's an amazing girl to get to do it for. The Cardinals, I knew she was a huge fan in my mind I was thinking if I did this here I knew every time we watched a game or went to a game I would be like 'ya I proposed to you there,'" said Johanson.
Shelby said yes and the crowd at Busch Stadium went wild.
"I didn't think it was going to be on the field, live TV in front of everybody. I thought maybe it was going to be in the stands. But since it happened the way it did it was more than I could have even planned or imagined," said Johanson.
"He did it big and it will be the most memorable moment of my life," said Shelby.
Shelby and William met through a mutual friend a year and a half ago. They were first friends and have been dating for six months, most of the time the two were apart. They say it was difficult but, they wrote many emails and spoke via Skype.
Johanson flies back to Afghanistan in two weeks. They say the wedding will probably be sometime next summer. The couple will be planning it together when Johanson gets back from deployment in 6 months.
