St. Louis (KSDK) -- A new report released overnight looks at the quality the air in St. Louis and found that the area doesn't fare so well.

An annual report just released about America's air quality reveals that St. Louis is among the Nation's most polluted cities.

According to the American Lung Association's State of the Air report, St. Louis ranks number 10 on the list of cities most polluted by year-round particle pollution. Number 1 is Bakersfield, California.

Particle pollution is the most dangerous and deadly widespread air pollutant in America. It's a harmful mix of microscopic bits of ash, soot, diesel exhaust, chemicals, metals and aerosols. It can lead to early death, heart attacks, strokes and emergency room visits.

The American Lung Association points out that since the State of the Air report began more than a decade ago, air quality is at its cleanest in America's most polluted cities. But still, 40% of people in the US live in areas where air pollution threatens their health.

The cleanest city in the nation, according to the State of the Air report, is Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Below is a list of the Nation's Most Polluted Cities from State of the Air 2012.
