Clayton, MO (KSDK) - One of two men charged in a "pigeon drop" scam in Florissant last year has pleaded guilty and will serve one year in the county jail, followed by probation for the next five years.

53 year old Eugene O'Neal pleaded guilty to a pair of felony stealing charges related to his arrest last December after police say he and his accomplice, 62 year old Lawrence Van scammed an elderly Florissant resident outside a supermarket of $5000.00 and a similar incident occurring in July 2011 in unincorporated St. Louis County.

Police say O'Neal and Van duped the 89 year old victim into believing a story of their family being held hostage in South Africa and their need to collect $100,000.00 to gain their freedom.

When the victim opened the package he though contained his $5000.00 he found nothing more than shredded newspapers.

Van returns to court next month on similar charges related to the two incidents.
