St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A man who police say brandished a replica handgun while trying to rob the White Castle restaurant at Natural Bridge and Kingshighway early Saturday is dead after he was shot by a veteran police officer.

The name of the victim has not been released by police who say they have evidence the dead man had tried once before to rob the same business.

Authorities tell NewsChannel 5 around 3:50 a.m. this morning, the suspect entered the restaurant, approached the counter and threatened employees.  Two off-duty St. Louis police officers working security at the business observed the crime unfolding and confronted the armed suspect.

The suspect refused to comply with officers and out of fear for their own safety, and the safety of employees and diners inside the White Castle, one of the officers fired one shot, striking the man in the abdomen.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer involved is a 48 year old policewoman with 21 years on the St. Louis force.  She's been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.  No other injuries were reported.
