St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Laclede Gas Company is warning customers Friday about a new scam that claims the federal government is paying utility bills through a new program but is really out collecting personal information.
The Better Business Bureau says customers are being contacted by phone, fliers, social media and text messages. The people behind the scam ask Laclede customers to provide a Social Security number and bank routing number. Customers are then given a fake bank routing number to pay their bill.
No such federal program exists.
If a customer has questions about their bill or thinks they may be a target of a possible scam, they should contact Laclede Gas at 314-621-6960.
Laclede Gas Company serves more than 625,000 natural gas customers in St. Louis and the surrounding counties in eastern Missouri.
