JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - More than 9,500 Missouri residents will receive $716,493 in restitution after a settlement with Skechers USA, Inc. The settlement is related to allegations of deceptive advertising for Shape-Ups, which were advertised as toning shoes.
Missouri was one of 44 states to participate in the settlement with the federal government.
Attorney General Chris Koster says any Missouri resident who filed a valid claim for refund after the settlement was announced in May 2012 should receive a check soon. The average settlement check is $34, but each consumer's reimbursement amount will vary depending on the product they purchased.
Skechers is accused of making unfounded claims that the shoes would help people lose weight, fight cellulite, and firm and tone muscles. Skechers has not admitted any wrongdoing.
