Lieutenant Michael Blassie

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - When soldiers go off to war, they leave desperate family and friends behind. A parent's worst nightmare is to not have their son or daughter come home from war. For the Blassie family of Florissant, it took decades before their soldier, Lieutenant Michael Blassie, finally came home.

Thirteen years ago, then-Secretary of Defense William Cohen confirmed the remains in the ominous Tomb of the Unknowns were indeed those of Michael J. Blassie. The Department of Defense decided to exhume the remains after an investigation revealed Blassie's ID card was found next to the remains.

At Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, a memorial stone commemorates Blassie for his military service. Even though it was decades later, the Blassie family was relieved to finally have their son home.
