St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - A well-known restaurateur was attacked near his St. Louis home Monday evening. But 80-year-old Vincent Bommarito, owner of Tony's Restaurant, did not go down without a fight.
Bommarito said the attack occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Police said Bommarito was unloading his car when two men surprised him from behind, hit and kicked him, and stole his briefcase.
Bommarito bit and kicked one man and yelled for help. An alert neighbor called police and the men escaped. Bommarito suffered a few bruises, but he declined medical treatment.
The former St. Louis police board member said he didn't have time to be scared.
"I had these little legs going as fast as they could go. I'm swinging those arms. I think that was just a natural reaction for a feisty old guy," Bommarito said. "The sensible thing would have been to say, 'Take what you want.'"
When asked why he didn't just comply, he said, "I couldn't help it."
Bommarito praised the police department for finding his beloved address book, which had been taken from his stolen briefcase. He said from now on, he'll be more careful going home at night.
