Milo, MO (KSDK) - The Vernon County Sheriff's Department and the Human Society of Missouri (HSMO) Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued 16 horses and two donkeys from a property in Vernon County.

The task force found seven dead horses on the property and at least five horses appeared to be severely underweight. One horse was actually unable to stand.

The only food available for the animals was low-quality hay.

Earlier this week, the sheriff's department received calls from concerned citizens about dead and starving horses on the property. A warrant was obtained Thursday to remove the animals.

The rescued horses and donkeys will be taken to the Humane Society of Missouri's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union.

The animals will remain in the custody of the Humane Society of Missouri until the disposition hearing scheduled later this month in Nevada, Missouri.

If you have any information on animal abuse please call 314-951-1542.
