Santa Clara, CA (KPIX/CNN) - An elementary school principal has been arrested on drug charges in Santa Clara, California.

"It's kind of scary to send you kids to school when you don't know who's really supervising them," said Danielle Talavera.

Principal Eric Lewis, 42, of Montague Elementary School is behind bars after being busted with drugs. Police say they found a quarter-ounce of methamphetamine inside of his house, the party drug GHB, scales, and unmarked pills.

Police made the arrest, but they were on to the principal for awhile. Following up on a tip, an undercover agent started chatting with him on a dating site.

Lewis allegedly offered him narcotics and agreed to meet up, but instead he was met by police. They confiscated the drugs and Superintendent Bobby Plough says they also took his school computer.

"We're shocked, because this isn't something certainly that we want for our leadership in this district, it's not anything that we condone or tolerate," said Plough.

District officials are talking with kids, some just in kindergarten, about what happened.

Mr. Lewis, as he was called, was the principal at the school for seven years. He had a stellar record and was popular with students and their parents.

"He was a good principal, everybody loved him, that was the thing. I mean it's going to be hard for everybody," said parent Billy Wilkinson.

Some finding it hardest to understand why this man, who was a leader and had 450 students looking up to him, was not practicing what he preached. He was involved with the D.A.R.E. program designed to educate kids about drugs and discourage use.

"You're teaching them not to do drugs, to stay away from that, and then you know, secretly that's what he's doing on the side," said Talavera.

"It's a very sad time for the school, but I think mostly we will explain to the students that people make bad choices sometimes. These things happen. We have to move on," said Plough.

Eric Lewis was charged with five felonies for drug sales and possession, plus a misdemeanor charge of possessing drug paraphernalia.
