Lengthy police standoff in St. Charles neighborhood now over

St. Charles ( KSDK ) -- A Standoff in St. Charles is over.  Around 9 a.m. a man claiming to be armed with a gun refused to leave a home in the vicinity of McClay and Hackman in St. Charles when police showed up to deal with a domestic dispute.

Family members told police the man had several hunting rifles in the home. They also learned the man had an active felony arrest warrant from the Lincoln Co. Sheriff's office for Assault 2nd Degree on a Law Enforcement Officer.

Police entered the house around 7:20pm.  They found the man hiding in a storage space in the basement of the home.  He was tryign to hide and escape the effects of tear gas.  Officers say the man resisted arrest.  He had some minor injuries and was sent to the hospital.

Police tell NewsChannel 5 a handful of neighbors were asked to evacuate while the standoff drags on.
