BUHLER, Kan. (KWCH/CNN) - Marriage isn't always easy, and a Kansas couple married for more than 60 years would be the first to tell you that.

But the couple's family says the husband and wife stood by each other no matter what happened in life, and in death.

To the very end Melvin Cornelson knew how to impress a woman, and in his life there was only one.

"They never dated anybody else," said their daughter, Candi Sawatzky.

He and wife Doris said "I do" 62 years ago, and grew old together and died together.

After a battle with cancer, at the age of 85 Melvin died last Thursday, and Doris, like she had been for more than six decades, was by his side.

But within hours, Candi says her mom began to fade.

"She sat with us all morning and talked and kind of tried to plan a few things for daddy and then she went to bed at noon and just never got up," said Candi.

Their family has a theory.

"I think that he said enough was enough, 'I'm going to go,' and that gives her that permission to go," said Candi's husband, Randy Sawatzky.

Because Melvin and Doris weren't going anywhere without each other.

"I have great pictures in my head of what they're doing," said Candi.

And that, is why even in death, the people Melvin and Doris left behind, can do nothing other than smile.

"They're happy; I know they are," said Candi.

Doris was 80 and had recently gone into hospice care because of illness.

The couple lived in Oklahoma until family brought them to the nursing home in Buhler to be closer.
