MEXICO, Mo. (KSDK) - A Springfield man who was a frequent visitor to a family farm in Pike County has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release for killing his wife at the farm, and dumping her body into a cistern more than twenty years ago.
60 year old Douglas Howery was handed his punishment yesterday in Audrain County where he was convicted at trial on a change of venue out of Pike County.
Betty Howery, 44 of St. Charles, disappeared from the family farm near Annada in February 1992. Her remains were found in 2008 when a work crew unearthed her skeletal remains, and a firearm inside an underground septic tank on the property.
Howery's trial was delayed in 2010 after the death of his defense attorney on June 7, 2010.
Howery was arrested at his Springfield home in 2009 after investigators say evidence in the case, pointed at him as the person responsible.
