JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency across Missouri due to the winter storm.

Gov. Nixon is also urging drivers to stay off roads.

A mixture of snow, sleet, and ice has hit the state, and some areas are projected to get more than 10 inches of snow.

Gov. Nixon has also activated the Missouri State Emergency Operations plan to allow state agencies to coordinate directly with local jurisdictions for emergency services.

The State Emergency Operations Center has been monitoring the storm since Wednesday morning, and Gov. Nixon has been receiving regular updates from his emergency management team, and officials with the Missouri Department of Public Safety, Missouri National Guard, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and State Emergency Management Agency.

Missouri residents who need information should call 211. If 211 does not work, call 800-427-4626.

If you become stranded on the road or witness an accident, call the Missouri State Highway Patrol's emergency line by dialing *55 from a cell phone.

Residents are also urged to check on the elderly and other neighbors that may need assistance.
