(KSDK) -- Three people are dead following a shooting and high speed pursuit in the west St. Louis County suburbs of Town & Country and Ladue. Police say a man, identified as John Alexander of Frontenac shot and killed his estranged wife Kelli Alexander, 35, also of Frontenac and the caregiver of their children 29 year old April Wheeler of St. Charles, who is a friend of the family. John Alexander shot his wife, who was in her car with their three children, outside a home in the 2600 block of Bopp Road shortly before 6 p.m. Friday night. Video: Police Press Conference Corporal Jeff Myer, spokesman for the Town & Country Police Department, says police received several calls about a possible shooting outside a home on Bopp Road, which is just south of Clayton Road in Town & Country. Officers responding to the scene found both Mrs. Alexander and Ms. Wheeler shot in the street. Both were pronounced dead on the scene. Police then received information that John Alexander had fled in a white GMC Yukon Denali and a pursuit began. Police say Alexander:

  • Drove southbound on Bopp to west on Manchester.
  • He then drove north on Interstate 270 and exited east on Page.
  • He drove thru the intersection at Schutz, made a U-Turn and headed west on Page.
  • The suspect then returned to Interstate 270, this time heading south to Hwy 40.
  • He then drove east on Highway 40, headed toward the city. Just before Alexander got to the Lindbergh exit, he drove down a hill and jumped the 3-foot high Lindbergh median and hit a curb. The SUV then tumbled end over end at least 10 times. The SUV ended up overturned in the grassy area near the ramp. The force of the impact caused three of the four wheels from the SUV to become detached. Witnesses say the driver was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour. John Alexander was taken to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Children Now Safe The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the St. Louis County Crime Lab at the murder scene in Town & Country. Cpl. Myer says the shooting took place in front of the Alexander children. But he they were not hurt and that friends and family are taking care of them this evening. Witnesses have told police that 3 or more shots were fired. Neighbors tell NewsChannel 5 that the couple was estranged and were going through a divorce. The couple is parents to three children, two going to a Ladue School District elementary school. Authorities say that Kelly Alexander filed a restraining order against her husband in January of 2005. NewsChannel 5 has learned that this is not the first time John Alexander has been in the news. In 2001, Alexander was part of a NewsChannel 5 story having a heated discussion with former Frontenac Mayor Mark Brennan. At the time Alexander was accusing the mayor of wrongdoing. He was frequently in attendance at Frontenac council meetings.
