Jeffery Sminchak charged in Russell Miller homicide case

Collinsville, IL (KSDK) - The Madison County State's Attorney's Office has charged a second person in connection with the homicide of a 55-year-old Collinsville man.

Russell Miller was reported missing on April 15. Eight days later, Miller was found dead in the 900 block of St. Clair Court.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated and 18 investigators from the metro area responded to the scene.

On Thursday, the Collinsville Police Department said the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office charged Timothy Hillyer, 49, with two counts of concealment of a homicidal death. His bond was set at $250,000.

Hillyer lived with Miller in an apartment in the 900 block of St. Clair Court.

On Friday, another of Miller's roommates, 55-year-old Jeffery Sminchak, was charged with two counts of obstruction of justice. He remains jailed on $50,000 bond.

Additional charges could be still filed against both men.
