St. Charles, MO (KSDK) - St. Charles Police say thieves got more than they bargained for when they stole a truck with 2,000 mice inside.

Police say that at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Dustin Maas, 30, and Matthew Haney, 23, stole the Freightliner Truck transporting mice from the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn in the 2000 block of Zumbehl Rd in an effort to support their heroin addiction.

The driver of the truck was notified by hotel staff that witnesses observed two white males bash in the window of the vehicle and leave in it.

The driver said the vehicle had been left running because of the refrigeration unit necessary for the $10,000 worth of medical mice in the back.

The transport company was able to track the vehicle by GPS and police caught the truck and the suspects a short time later.

Maas and Haney are both in police custody.

The mice were recovered unharmed.
