St. Louis County crime reduction in 2012

St. Louis County, MO (KSDK) - Serious crime in St. Louis County has gone down in the first six months in 2012 compared to this same time last year, the St. Louis County Police Department said Wednesday.

There were 12 homicides reported in 2011 compared to 2 in 2012, resulting in a decrease in murder of 83.3 percent. The number of forcible rapes has dropped by 25 percent, robbery went down by 11.5 percent, and aggravated assault decreased by 1.1 percent.

Arsons went down 22.2 percent, burglaries decreased 28.1 percent and larceny-theft dropped by 9.5 percent.

However, Motor vehicle thefts went up in the county - 3.7 percent compared to last year.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said the heroin deaths in the county declined, going from 39 in the first six months of 2011 to 25 over the same period in 2012.

The St. Louis County Police Department protects more than 400,000 residents in the county and others living in unincorporated areas.
