Clayton, MO (KSDK) - The trigger man in the shooting of a Florissant police officer will be in court for his arraignment this afternoon.

Brian Cannon, 20, is charged with assault of the officer, burglary, and two counts of armed criminal action.

The St. Louis County grand jury indicted the Walnut Park man last week.

On May 28th, Cannon was reported to be hiding inside a trash container behind a strip mall in the 2800 block of North Hwy 67, also known as Lindbergh Boulevard, after police say he broke into a nearby home.

When Officer Mike Vernon was on patrol, he took note of some suspicious activity behind the businesses and as he got out of his patrol car to investigate, Cannon opened fire.

Officer Vernon was shot three times according to court records with one of the bullets lodging in his spine and another piercing a lung.

Cannon was already on probation at the time of the officer's shooting, for an unrelated burglary conviction.  Cannon remains in jail awaiting Wednesday's arraignment.
