JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow says what Christopher Vaughn did to his family was more than murder.

Reacting after a jury found Vaughn guilty Thursday of first-degree murder in the deaths of his wife and three children, Glasgow called the crime "an atrocity."

Glasgow said for Vaughn to annihilate his family, "I can't think of a more unspeakable crime."

The 37-year-old Vaughn showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Family members of the victims cried and hugged each other in a hallway outside the courtroom afterward.

Prosecutors contended Vaughn killed his family because he saw them as inconvenient obstacles to his dream of a new life in the Canadian wilderness.

Vaughn was eligible for the death penalty when the case began, but Illinois has since abolished capital punishment.
