St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - An attempted robbery at the Family Dollar store in north St. Louis ended peacefully overnight when the armed suspect surrendered to police after a brief standoff.

Authorities were called by an employee of the store at Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Newstead around 12:16 a.m.  The male employee told police he and the store manager were working late to stock merchandise.  When they were leaving for the night, a man with a gun approached and announced a robbery.

The employee ran from the scene and the armed suspect then forced the store manager back into the store and ordered the manager to open the safe.

After complying with the suspects instructions, the store manager was able to escape the building to freedom.

The robber then barricaded himself into a storage room as police closed in.  Officers attempted to talk with the suspect for a time, then contacted their hostage negotiation unit to assist.

The unidentified robber surrendered to police just after 1:45 a.m. today without incident.  He's now in custody pending the application of a warrant.

No injuries reported.
