EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A man originally sentenced to 20 years in prison in the shotgun killing of his girlfriend has been ordered to spend more than twice that time behind bars on his conviction after a retrial.

A Madison County judge imposed a 45-year sentence Wednesday on 51-year-old Brian Pinkas.

Pinkas acknowledged he shot 37-year-old Sharon Reynolds in the head in 2004 at their home in Granite City, but he says it was an accident.

Pinkas later pleaded guilty and got 20 years. But an appellate court threw out his guilty plea after he argued his sentence improperly didn't include a mandatory 25-year term for firearm use.

He was convicted in September.

The county's state's attorney, Thomas Gibbons, says Pinkas' roll of the dice in seeking the new trial was unwise.
