EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - East St. Louis Mayor, Alvin parks, says two people are in police custody in connection to a robbery during services at a local church Sunday evening.
The robbery happened Sunday around 5 p.m. at Ira Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Witnesses say the men, wearing bandanas on their faces, rushed through the door, announced a hold-up and ordered everyone to the floor. They took wallets, cash, and cell phones. No one was hurt during the hold-up.
Members of the East St. Louis Police Chaplaincy will hold a meeting today at 11 a.m. to discuss church security.
Rev. Dr. Zachary Lee, monitor for the New Salem Baptist District Association, counsels more than 55 black Baptist churches in the Metro East and western Illinois. He says churches should consider locking exterior doors during services, and only allow people in who are recognized by church members or ushers.
Lee says members of the police chaplaincy will have more recommendations after Tuesday's city hall meeting.
