Kirkwood City Hall

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - Thursday, February 7 marks the five-year anniversary of an event that forever changed the City of Kirkwood and the St. Louis region.

A disgruntled resident opened fire inside Kirkwood City Hall during a city council meeting, killing three city officials and two police officers, and wounding two others. The gunman, Charles "Cookie" Thornton, was later shot and killed by police.

Mayor Mike Swoboda, who was critically wounded at the time, eventually recovered and was able to serve out his second term in office. He died in September 2008 at the age of 69. Friends and colleagues said his death was the result of the shooting and a battle with cancer.

The Kirkwood City Council is meeting Thursday night at city hall, the first meeting on this date since the shooting.

NewsChannel 5's Ryan Dean spoke with attorney John Hessel, a witness to the shooting, who discussed the emotions surrounding the anniversary.
