EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - An East St. Louis, Ill. resident has been sentenced to eight years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm.
Court documents state 21-year-old Cartez R. Beard was with a group of individuals standing on a street corner in East St. Louis.
Officers spotted the group and when they approached them, Beard turned his back away from the officers.
An officer asked Beard if he had something on him that he should not, and Beard replied that he did. He told the officer he had a gun on his right hip.
A Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered loaded with a round in the chamber.
In September 2012 Beard pleaded guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.
Beard was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and a $250 fine.
