EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KSDK) - An East St. Louis, Ill. man has pleaded guilty to filing a false federal income tax return.
As part of the plea, 22-year-old Demetrius L. Combs admitted he filed a false 2010 federal income tax return prepared by Prime Time Tax Services in Shiloh, Ill., owned by Delaun Leflore and Carey Herron.
Between 2008 and 2011 Leflore and Herron used electronic software to prepare and file returns, and usually applied for refund anticipation loans.
Court documents state Leflore and Herron conspired with their clients to claim fraudulent refunds using false Schedule C income and expenses.
Leflore and Herron would discuss with their clients how to receive more money by creating self-employment income.
Clients paid Leflore or Herron an extra cash fee, usually $500, to prepare the false returns.
Once the refund checks were received, Leflore, Herron, or another employee would take the clients to Belleville Quick Stop to cash the check. Once the check was cashed, Leflore, Herron, or another representative would take the $500 fee.
Combs pleaded guilty Thursday.
He is scheduled to be sentenced July 12.
