GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KSDK) - Charges have been filed against a 17-year-old accused of shooting and killing a 13-year-old boy Wednesday.
LaRoyce Montez McFadden of Granite City has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
McFadden is accused of shooting and killing Clayton Veninga as he sat on his porch with a friend. He was taken into custody Thursday evening without incident.
A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed. Veninga's sister, Asia Canter, says she is confident her brother, who she describes as kind, peaceful, and generous, was not the intended target.
"He may not have been the intended target. We think there may have been an ongoing dispute with someone else and he may have just been in the line of fire," said Tom Gibbons, The Madison County State's Attorney.
McFadden is held without bond at the Granite City Police Department. He will be transported Friday evening to the Madison County Jail.
Clayton's visitation will be held Sunday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Wojstrom Funeral Home and Cemetery in Granite City.
Donations can be made to the family to help with funeral costs at any U.S. Bank to account number 152314843565.
