WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KSDK) - Fourteen-month-old Elijah Yeager was found unresponsive inside his mother's home on Kent Drive home in Wentzville in April. He died days later.

A grand jury indicted 34-year-old Stacy Yeager on three counts of child abuse, agreeing with the prosecution's evidence that something she did had something to do with her son's death. But prosecutors say another person may be involved.

"The medical examiner has ruled Elijah's death a homicide," said St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney Timothy Lohmar. "The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. There were numerous other abrasions and bruising all over the child's body, which would be consistent with child abuse."

Lohmar said there are three theories of how Elijah's death took place. All involve the child's mother.

"The grand jury considered the evidence and they returned an indictment that charged Ms. Yeager with either recklessly causing serious physical injury to this child, knowingly causing serious physical injury to this child, or in the alternative placing this child in imminent risk of danger by placing him in the presence and under the supervision of someone who has a violent criminal past," he said.

NewsChannel 5 spoke with a neighbor who knows Stacy Yeager pretty well and said Yeager is a sweet person and a hard worker who does everything she can possibly do to take care of her large family. That same neighbor says there's absolutely no way she did anything to hurt her little boy.

"There's another suspect who is the focus of the investigation at this point," said Lohmar.

He couldn't identify that suspect, but says there was a close tie.

"Our evidence is that he was staying in the home for an extended period of time all during the time period when Elijah was abused and eventually died," he said.

But at this point, only Elijah's mother is charged. The investigation is ongoing.
