St. Clair County, IL (KSDK) -- An accident that happened nearly three years ago continues to haunt a family.
Kelly and Christine Marler are filing suit against the State of Illinois for injuries and pain they suffered in a car accident. The collision was caused by former Illinois State Trooper Matt Mitchell.
Mitchell was driving on Interstate 64 in O'Fallon, Illinois at more than 100 miles an hour when the accident happened.
The Marlers are asking for $1.3 million. A panel will make a final decision on how much is allotted.
The collision also killed the Uhl sisters, Kelli and Jessica.
"Unfortunately in our system, whether it's in the civil court or the court of claims all we can do is award individual's monetary damages. That unfortunately doesn't compensate them adequately for what they've been through, but unfortunately that's the best we have," said the Marler's attorney, Troy Walton.
Mitchell was convicted of reckless homicide in the deaths of the Kelli and Jessica Uhl. The Uhl family is seeking $46 million for their loss.
