Riverside, CA (KABC/CNN) - A white California high school has returned a $1,000 scholarship after he learned the scholarship committee assumed he was African-American.
Jeffrey Warren, 17, was awarded the money at a school awards night last month at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside.
The scholarship is given out by the MLK Senior Citizens Club.
Club members didn't know Warren was white until they called his name.
After realizing the mix-up, Warren decided to hand back the cash.
"I don't think that the committee knew that I was Caucasian, but once they obviously selected me and announced me up they kind of found out," said Warren. "I know that they were trying to do a good deed for the African-American community and I saw that too, so I had no trouble giving it back to them at all."
Warren says the scholarship application itself only stated that African-Americans were "encouraged" to apply.
The club says it will change the language on next year's application so there is no confusion.
The scholarship has now been given to an African-American girl.
