East St. Louis School District
East St. Louis, Ill (KSDK) -- The East St. Louis school district will cut 50 administrative jobs and delay the start of school by a week, according to Beth Shepperd with the East St. Louis schools.
The eliminated positions include administrative clerk, custodian, coordinator, warehouse worker, security guard and attendance officer.
Teachers will report on August 20 and fall classes will begin August 22.
"We could have opened on August 15," said Superintendent Arthur Culver, "but we would not have been able to give our students the quality beginning to their year that they deserve. The delay will allow us to have repairs made to Miles Davis and to be sure that necessary staff is in place. Also, there are major air conditioning issues at Dunbar that must be addressed."
In June, the Illinois State Board of Education announced the ousting of the board for chronic academic underperformance.
A. St. Clair County Associated Judge barred it from happening. He said it was was unconstitutional to remove an elected board and that it had not been given due process and the school code used for the removal was being selectively applied.
