St. Louis County (KSDK) - Some school bus drivers from California are getting a little change of scenery. That's because about a dozen are temporarily filling in for the Rockwood School District.

A spokesman for First Student, the nationwide company that provides bus services for the district, says the company sent around 13 local drivers to Nebraska to help cover a shortage there. But bus routes grew here in St. Louis, requiring more drivers to be brought in from out-of-state.

There was some concern from parents that the new drivers wouldn't have time to learn their routes before school started. But Bill Sloan, Rockwood's transportation director, says things are going smoothly.

"All of our drivers do dry runs before the first day of school and these drivers did too," said Sloan. "They did that on Monday and they had a chance to go through and check their routes out."

Both First Student and the Rockwood School District say there have been no real problems with the temporary drivers, just the annual growing pains they see every year with any driver.

The district's regular drivers should be back on the job by early September.
