JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri community colleges will get nearly $18 million in federal funds to train students for careers in manufacturing and public safety.

The governor's office said Wednesday that the U.S. Labor Department is providing $15 million for a consortium of community colleges around Missouri led by St. Louis Community College. The money will be used to train people in skills such as welding, manufacturing production and industrial maintenance.

An additional $2.9 million grant will go to Crowder College in Neosho to educate students in law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medical services. Crowder will also launch a new associate's degree program in public management.
