St. Louis County (KSDK) - Students in the Ritenour School District collected more than 28,200 food items for families in need.

Nonperishable food items were collected, along with turkeys and potatoes for Thanksgiving feasts.

The amount of food collected this year exceeds last year's total by nearly 2,000 items.

The food will be donated to local food pantries as the Joint Charities Christmas Basket Program. Ritenour High School is also collecting money to be donated to the charity.

Earlier this school year Ritenour High School collected 1,443 pounds of canned food for a collection sponsored by Del Monte and Shop 'N Save.
