St. Clair, MO (KSDK) - Some tense moments earlier today after police in St. Clair were notified of a possible shooting incident near the campuses of the community's elementary and high schools.
Police were called around 9:00 a.m. concerning a shot being fired near the area of Bartow and Highway 30 which is near the center of the two schools property.
A thorough search of the area was performed after police ordered the schools to be placed on lock down while they investigated. Investigators questioned area residents who told police they heard one loud blast that shook the windows of their homes.
As it turns out, there was no evidence of any type of shooting involved, and police believe the load noise area residents heard was actually a vehicle that backfired.
The all clear was given and students were returned to school shortly after 10:00 a.m. Friday morning.
