SHIPMAN, Ill. (KSDK) - There is some hopeful news for parents of students at Shipman Elementary School in Shipman, Illinois north of Alton.
Last week administrators at the Southwestern School District announced Shipman would close next year, sending students to other schools.
Declining enrollment and budget problems are to blame.
Tuesday night parents packed a special board meeting, and board members voted to reconsider the closing.
That's great news for parents like Amanda Powers, who says there is way more at stake here than just students having to change schools.
"All we have is one small school, one grocery store, and a post office. If we lose our school we lose our post office and we'll lose our bank. We'll have nothing," said Powers.
She says she will continue to fight for the school and her town and plans to attend next month's board meeting.
