BETHALTO, Ill. (KSDK) - This week NewsChannel5 has been looking at reading programs, especially for young children. Education reporter Sharon Stevens tells us the reading recovery program in the Bethalto School District is making a difference one student at a time.

The numbers tell the story for teachers such as Raelene Roberson, a reading specialist at Bethalto Primary School.

Roberson says about 25 percent of the children entering the school each year need help with reading.

"They can fall through the cracks," she says. "They can and they can get up into the later grades and then they are struggling."

Reading Recovery is an intervention program for students who are at least five-years-old. Educators say children who start the program perhaps not being able to write their own names, are the ones who benefit from the daily half-hour classes.

"I would say 75 percent of the kiddos we see, go on into the classroom and they're reading right along with the regular classroom kiddos of their age," Roberson says.

Educators say it's not enough to have reading recovery and other reading programs in the school. Parents have to be involved at home as well.
