BALLWIN, Mo. (KSDK) - A state audit of the Rockwood School District is raising concerns about finances, management and operations of the St. Louis County district.

According to Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich, the district overpaid a management company by $1.2 million over the last decade.

Schweich added that he found a conflict of interest involving a school board member, Steve Smith, who was involved in discussions about Glenn Construction, a company he worked for.

The state auditor's office has recommended the district collect the extra fees it paid to the construction company.

In a letter from the board of education to the Rockwood community, the school acknowledges making "some mistakes in the past" and apologized for them.

The audit, ordered by Governor Jay Nixon's office, was paid for by the state.
