HILLSBORO, Mo. (KSDK) - A Hillsboro High student has been nominated for the prestigious Presidential Scholars Program and is the first student in his school district to receive a nomination.
Senior Timmy Gerlach is one of only 3,000 nominees selected by the U.S. Department of Education.
The qualifications are tough: superior academic and artistic achievement, leadership qualities and involvement in community activities.
Timmy said he is excited to be nominated.
He's got a lot of people in his corner. His guidance counselor drove Timmy's application form all the way to the program's Iowa headquarters to make sure it got there in time.
"I'm pretty amazed that I've gotten this far. I mean, I definitely appreciate the nomination and the ability to even apply for something like this," said Timmy.
The finalists will be announced in April.
There are other local nominees including students from the Parkway, Clayton, Francis Howell and Ladue school districts as well as many private schools.
