HILLSBORO, Mo. (KSDK) - Hillsboro High School senior Garrett Anderson expected to graduate Tuesday night without his dad in the crowd.

His father has been serving in Afghanistan for the last 10 months.

But Staff Sgt. Steven Anderson found out at the last minute he would make it home in time for the ceremony. He and his wife went to great lengths to keep it from his son.

Garrett's dad disguised himself in a graduation gown and a wig to blend in with the crowd. He watched as his son was recognized by members of the Marine Corps before receiving his diploma.

Garrett joined the Corps and will leave for boot camp in one month. As soon as the recognition concluded, Staff Sgt. Anderson's presence was announced by the principal.

The father and son embraced as Staff Sgt. Anderson whispered, "I love you buddy."

"He's grown up to be a good young man. He's going to make a great Marine. He's done everything right, he's done everything to make me proud," said Staff Sgt. Anderson.

The father and son will get to spend limited time together before Garrett will ship off to boot camp on June 15.
