  • Joplin, Mo (KSDK) -- A symbol of the destructive Joplin tornado has come back to life.

The new Mercy Hospital in Joplin will begin accepting patients April 15 until Mercy Hospital Joplin opens in a couple of years.  The component hospital will serve as a bridge until the new permanent 600,000 square foot Mercy Hospital Joplin opens.

The media will get tours of the component hospital April 11.

Its steel construction is sturdier than the old St. John's Regional Medical Center destroyed eight months ago.

The new facility includes a full-scale emergency department.  Surgeons can once again conduct complex procedures.  Mercy doctors can deliver babies again.  The hospital has imaging technology, that in many cases, is newer and more powerful that what was used at St. John's, such as a new CT scanner that captures images with twice the resolution.

Patients can rest in rooms with monitoring features, communication capabilities and private bathrooms. The two-story inpatient wings can accommodate more than 100 patients. A cafeteria, gift shop, pharmacy and chapel complete the picture.

Co-workers and contractors first opened a tent hospital a week after the tornado. They followed months later with a small hospital assembled from components, which looked like trailers.
