John Cochran V.A. Hospital
St. Louis (KSDK) -- The new sterilization unit opened at the John Cochran V.A. Medical Center in St. Louis.
The Sterile Processing Service is responsible for decontamination, cleaning and sterilization of instruments used in medical and surgical procedures. They clean and sterilize over 20,000 surgical trays per year in support of the almost 3,000 surgical cases performed each year.
Officials said this new equipment and technology will help prevent future problems.
In 2010, more than 1,800 veterans were potentially exposed to hepatitis and HIV at the center's dental clinic.
Later, all surgeries at the hospital were suspended over new sterilization concerns.
Since then, the V.A. says its taken several steps to correct the problems.
