(CNN) - Stress can lead to health problems like early aging, heart problems, sleeplessness, and even death.

The question is how can people take on the year 2013 with a less stressful attitude?

Some stress can actually help keep people motivated, but too much can cause serious problems.

According to doctors, stress increases cortisol and other hormone levels in our bodies that can cause us to age. That aging can increase our risk of cancer and cause inflammation that can lead to heart disease, memory loss, and stroke.

In order to reduce stress, doctors recommend you try to meditate at least 20 to 30 minutes a day.

Deep breathing can also help regulate pulmonary and circulatory systems, increasing blood flow to the body.

Two last pieces of advice to carry into the new year; don't carry the burden of your problems alone and instead of getting angry with people, try to put yourself in their shoes.

Everyone has bad days.
