Here Comes Honey Boo Boo co-star Lee Thompson, known as "Uncle Poodle" on the show, has revealed that he is HIV positive.
Thompson, the brother of Alana Thompson's dad, Mike (Sugar Bear), shared his status in an interview with Atlanta-based gay magazine Fenuxe.
"I was adamant about getting my HIV status checked on a regular basis," he explains. "On March 16, 2012, I tested negative. Then, in May of 2012 my test results came back positive."
He says he is speaking about it now to help promote safe sex and to stop bullying in schools.
As for how he contracted the disease, he says, "I knew it had been my boyfriend who infected me. I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it. I was advised that I should press charges and, hesitantly, I did. It was the right thing to do."
His ex is now serving a five-year sentence, said Thompson, who married boyfriend Joshua Yarbroughe in August.
"I would have been cool with his HIV status if he had been honest," he added. "I don't have an issue with the disease. I would have known how to protect myself."
He also says he came out while in high school, where "on a daily basis I was bullied in one way or another."
Oh, and his nickname, if you didn't know already, comes from little Honey Boo Boo herself, who calls all gay men "my poodles," explains Thompson, "and I am her Uncle Poodle."
