ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Most of us rely on our doctors to figure out what's wrong with us when a symptom we thought would go away quickly a turns into a lingering complaint.

But two Harvard emergency room physicians believe that diagnosis is becoming a lost art. That taking your medical history leads to so-called cook-book medicine, where a list of tests and rule-outs are ordered, that may delay diagnosis or even put the patient through unpleasant tests that can be avoided.

Dr. Leana Wen is co-author of "When Doctors Don't Listen," and she joined First @ 4 on Thursday to talk about why she wrote the book.

Click the video player above to hear her five tips for what patients can do if they are not getting answers from their doctors.

Dr. Wen will sign her book Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m. at All On The Same Page bookstore at 11052 Olive Boulevard in Creve Coeur, and on Friday, February 1, at 2 p.m. at the Middendorf-Kredell Branch of the St. Charles City-County Library at 2750 Highway K in O'Fallon, Missouri.
