ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - We've always been told if you think you've having a heart attack, call 911, but a whopping 40 percent of people are allowing someone to drive them to the hospital, instead of waiting for an ambulance.

It turns out, that's one of the worst things you can do because you can actually end up waiting longer for treatment.

Now there's a national effort underway to reduce the time from heart attack to treatment, and 18 local hospitals are participating. A big part of it is aimed at getting you to call 911.

Dr. Michael Lim, Director of the Division of Cardiology at St. Louis University Medical Center joined First @ 4 to talk about the best way to get to the hospital during a heart attack.
