ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - The St. Louis County Health Department is stressing the importance of hand washing and cooking meals properly after an increase of illnesses.
A spokesperson for the health department says cases have been reported county-wide, with a 70 percent increase in cases in June and July compared to the last few years.
The county is offering three steps to reduce the risk of getting sick:
WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly after using the bathroom or changing diapers and before preparing or eating food.
COOK meats thoroughly. Ground beef and meat that has been needle-tenderized should be cooked to a temperature of at least 160°F (70°C).
PREVENT cross contamination in food preparation areas by thoroughly washing hands, counters, cutting boards, and utensils after they touch raw meat.
