EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A man killed in a fiery weekend car wreck has been identified as an Illinois Army National Guardsman home for the holidays.
Investigators in Madison County say 28-year-old Gabriel Patton of Edwardsville died in the accident early Saturday in Hamel Township.
Illinois State Police say Patton's 1999 Volkswagen left Illinois 157 and traveled more than 200 feet before striking a culvert, going airborne and landing on its roof. The car then caught fire.
Patton's mother, Sherry Nelson, says her son had been wrapping up boot camp at Missouri's Fort Leonard Wood and was home for the holidays. He was scheduled to return to the fort the day he was killed.
Funeral arrangements are pending at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta.
