St. Louis, MO (KSDK) -- Less than two weeks from Election Day and candidates for Missouri's 3rd Congressional seat seem to be playing hardball.
The website TheRealEdMartin.com went online earlier this week. And it levels some serious charges at the Republican Representative candidate, trying to connect his time working with the Catholic Church to the sex abuse scandals.
The website's creator claims to be working independently with a former Dateline NBC producer. He said he's uncovered evidence that shows Ed Martin could have done more to prevent sex crimes against children in the Catholic Church.
Martin, an attorney, previously worked for the Archdiocese of St. Louis as the director of the Human Rights Office. The website claims Martin was advising those who attempted to cover up sex abuse cases.
Martin said he had no involvement in any such decisions and blames the Russ Carnahan campaign for smearing his name.
Every Catholic in St. Louis, every Catholic in Missouri, every Catholic in America, should be offended by the smear that Congressman Russ Carnahan has perpetrated on this campaign.
The Carnahan campaign denies any connection to the website. The site's creator said he was hired to do research for the campaign, but parted ways with Carnahan's people after disagreeing about whether or not to pursue these allegations.
Martin was also sued by a fellow Republican for allegedly violating the terms of a previous settlement that goes back to his days with the St. Louis Board of Elections Commissioners.
Martin also calls the suit a political play by a Carnahan supporter, the attorney in the case, Chet Pleban.
