Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich.
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) -- St. Louis attorney Thomas Schweich says he will not run for the seat being vacated by Missouri Sen. Kit Bond.
Schweich, who served in President George W. Bush's administration, had considered a Senate bid at the encouragement of former Republican Sen. John Danforth.
But Schweich said Thursday that he is concerned a GOP primary probably would lower the chance of Republicans keeping Bond's seat.
Rep. Roy Blunt is the only declared Republican candidate for the 2010 Senate race. The only Democratic candidate is Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.
The Missouri Senate seat is expected to be one of the most closely contested as Democrats try to ensure they have a filibuster-proof majority in support of President Barack Obama.
